ABOUT

MEET JACKIE HAUER

Equal parts fashionista and wreck, I’m navigating life somewhere in between. Love fashion, beauty, and decor. Award-winning event planner, hostess with the mostest, organization queen, and weight loss success story. Chocolate, flowers, and just about anything pink or gold make me smile. Wife to a really good man, momma to 2 smart and gorgeous special needs boys, fiercely loyal friend. Loved by God.

In launching Haute Mess Life, my heart was to create a place where women could be authentic, imperfect, hilarious, decidedly not put together, and find that they are not accepted in spite of  these things, but accepted because of their willingness to be open and vulnerable. I know that in a world that values perfection and power, the idea of being open can be daunting and scary, so I’ve decided I’ll go first, in hopes you’ll join me.  Some of the events that have shaped who I am the most are not brief or easy stories to tell, especially as part of an About Me page, so I’ve decided to do things a bit differently…

To read more about my journey into motherhood and how I became a mom to two special needs kids, read this.

To learn about how I lost 130 pounds and gained my life back, read this.

If you’ve read those, you’re probably due for something a little lighter, so for that, scroll down to the next section 🙂

YOU ASKED

I ANSWERED

Instead of coming up with a list of carefully crafted items I want you to know about me, I decided to open up the process and let Haute Mess Life subscribers and social media followers create a Q&A  by submitting what they wanted to know… read on and see if your question is below.

Haute Mess Life

FAVORITE BOOK

The Bible. More specifically, the books of Ruth, Romans, and Isaiah, which all have special meaning to me

FAVORITE TV SHOW

All Time- Lost, because I loved Jack! In fact, I loved him so much that people thought that’s who I named my youngest after… (he’s named after my dad, whose initials are JAC and has gone by Jack for years!)

Still Airing- Grey’s Anatomy… flawed, complex characters finding themselves in ridiculous situations makes for compelling tv. Even when I am furious at the direction of the storylines, I tune in and watch… plus, McDreamy, Christina and Karev were my favorites. With 2 of the 3 gone, I’m now #teamKarev and waiting for them to do something great with him already!

FAVORITE MOVIE

I love all sorts of genres as long as the storyline is either compelling or entertaining, but being a girlie girl at heart, there’s always gonna be something magical about Notting Hill— I just can’t turn the channel whenever it’s on… Something about them being so wrong for each other on paper and so right for each other in real life always gets me.  “I’m also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her”

I mean, who can handle that quote from Julia Roberts??

{insert all the feels!!!}

FAVORITE SEASON

I’d like to qualify this by explaining that Florida has two seasons… Hotter than Hades and Below 80 degrees… so this question is actually harder to answer than I thought. Now, having said that, I would say that it is Winter.  Florida winter is more like spring or fall elsewhere, but I also love a real winter, with snow and all the cute fashion 🙂

FAVORITE BREAKFAST FOOD

Savory- An egg white omelette with mushrooms, tomatoes, bacon, ham, spinach, and cheese

Sweet- A strawberry, banana, and Nutella crepe

Not Home Cooked- A Zone Perfect Bar! My favorites are the Chocolate Peanut Butter, Dark Chocolate Almond, Though, in the interest of fairness, this answer may constitute cheating since I have those all different times of the day, so they aren’t really limited to breakfast

FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOURSELF

I have a love/hate relationship with my hair. It is half curly, half straight, and I have so much of it that it can be a pain to straighten or curl, but when it behaves I do really love it! It is silky, smooth, long, and full of life! Also, I have this indentation on my ring finger as a result of wearing my wedding bands for 12 years. Any time I’m not wearing my rings, I look at it and I think about how being married to Brad so long has changed and shaped me forever

FAVORITE THROWBACK SONG

Sooo many… Groove Is In The Heart, Gotta Be Startin’ Something, Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough, Don’t Stop Believing, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, Don’t You Want Me Baby, Take On Me…  I’m sure I’ll keep coming back to add to this list!

IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY SUPERPOWER, WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

There was a time in my life where I would have said invisibility or mind-reading, mainly to know what other people were thinking/saying about me, but the older I get, the less concerned I am with public opinion and the more I care about being someone my family, close friends, and God is pleased with… If you’d asked me this a couple of years ago, I would have said I wanted the ability to multiply myself so I could do it all, but again, the older I get the more aware I am of the foolishness behind that drive. I don’t want to do everything.  I just want to do the right things and do them well!

Having said that, I guess I would choose the ability to fly!  Quick trip to Versailles while the kids are at school? Don’t mind if I do!  Hubby wants authentic NYC pizza from his favorite place in Brooklyn?  Be back in a bit!  Not paying for airline tickets? Sign me up!

IF YOU HAD TO BE TRAPPED IN A TV SHOW FOR A MONTH, WHICH ONE WOULD IT BE?

All Time- Saved By The Bell, because who wouldn’t want to have Mr. Belding as a Principal and Zack Morris as a classmate/high school crush?!

Still Airing- Suits, because being a high-profile lawyer in New York City means you have an awesome job, and an even better apartment and wardrobe!!

IF YOU COULD MARRY YOUR CELEBRITY CRUSH, WHO WOULD YOU MARRY?

With all due respect to our spouses, Jordan Knight. That falsetto always makes my inner teenager swoon! I wouldn’t complain about Ryan Gosling either… lol!

IF YOU COULD BE BFF’S WITH ANY CELEBRITY FOR A DAY, WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

I could easily spend a day dancing it out, pranking people, and helping out families and schools with Ellen. I could also spend the day laughing hysterically with Donnie Wahlberg, Kevin Hart or Leah Remini, who seem equal parts hilarious and down to earth.

WHO WOULD YOU BRING BACK TO LIFE FOR A DAY?

I’d love for my grandma to have been present on my wedding day, or for her to spend a day with my kids… she was the best!

WOULD YOU RATHER BE RICH OR FAMOUS?

Rich.  I’d rather have money to do good with than to be famous. I feel like riches can be easily turned outwards, but fame is very much turned inward, and I don’t need the to be the center of attention to be happy, but using money to help people would make me really happy.

IF YOU COULD LIVE ANYWHERE FOR A YEAR, WHERE WOULD YOU LIVE?

This is an easy one… Paris!  There’s just something about it that has always had a grip on my heart.  I don’t think I’d get tired of the city and all it has to offer– culture, fashion, unexpected adventures.  I’d also love to take cooking lessons and learning how to make all my favorite french pastries (which my youngest son– with the sweet tooth he inherited from me– would greatly appreciate). Come to think of it, a year may not be enough time!

Haute Mess Life

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST IRRATIONAL FEAR?

Lizards. Don’t really want to get into it too much other than to say that there was a slightly traumatic lizard vs my very thick, super long hair elementary school experience that is solely to blame for this.  As an adult, I may or may not have called my husband while pregnant with our second child and asked him to come home from work cause there was a lizard in our kitchen and I was standing on top of the couch in the living room holding a 1 1/2 year old and shrieking every time the lizard inched closer to the living room… again, that may or may not have happened…  Also, they are weird, shrunken, prehistoric-freak-looking little things… and don’t even get me started on the ones with the red dewlaps that hang from their necks and puff up… ew!!!

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

My marriage, my children, and the people in my close circle of friends.  I am surrounded by people who challenge me, support me, and have proved that they don’t love conditionally. When things are hard, they stay. In fact, they lean in. They are some of the smartest, most fun-loving, genuine people I’ve ever met, and I am proud they call me mom/wife/friend

WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY?

Lots of things!  Obviously, my husband and kids. I am one of those lucky girls who married someone who is better with the passing of time- we are a better fit, a better team, and better individuals the longer we are together.  My kids are literal (and medical miracles), and as much as they can do typical things that drive me crazy at times, it is never truly lost on me that no one thought or imagined that they would be able to do ANY typical kid things, so I embrace the chaos and let myself be happy that I am a mom, especially to these two, who have given me at least as much as I’ve given them

Other things that make me happy– Really good chocolate and/or cheesecake, all things girly and pink and gold. A feminine dress and a day when both my hair and makeup turn out as expected. People watching, particularly if I can spot an elderly couple out and about. I love watching how they interact because it’s almost like perfect choreography… when they’ve been together a long time there is a rhythm to everything they do that I find enchanting. Our beautiful and sweet french bulldog Gigi Roux. New York City.. for a million self-explanatory reasons. And definitely NKOTB— I’ll be loving them forever!

WHAT NEW SKILL WOULD YOU LIKE TO LEARN?

I’d love to learn how to sew and knit so one day I can be a cute little old lady who makes things for babies… or dresses for my frenchie… keeping it real!

HOW WOULD YOUR FRIENDS DESCRIBE YOU?

Fun, creative, crazy, loyal, always up to something, honest, dependable, bubbly, driven

WHICH CITIES OR COUNTRIES WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT ?

Sooo many places. So hard to pick just 3 places to visit!  I’d love to spend a month going through France, Italy, and Spain. I’d also love to go to Bali, Fiji, Costa Rica, or Belize.
